HOK Sport designed the seven-tier stand, which boasts 1,000
television screens, seven restaraunts, 24 escalators and 265
hospitality boxes. The queen toasted the opening of the new grandstand
at Ascot Racecourse on the 20th June 2006, celebrating the race against
time to complete the £200m captial project in under 20 months. More
than the size of its predecessor, the new
50,000 plus seat grandstand
is a quarter mile in length and eight storey high. Directly behind the
stand is a new parade ring and showpiece amphitheatre, has terraced
seating for 8000 people. Ascot is a real team success for Laing
O'Rourke. It is a impressive display of engineering prefabrication and
assembley, with tight tolerances and complex geometry delivered in a
world class manner. More than 300,000 people will visit the new
grandstand during the Ascot week, making this Europe's most popular
race meeting.
Northern Doors were awarded the contract to supply
and install a total of 20 Safeguard 60 electrically operated shutters
to the refreshment and betting kiosks at lawn level. 5 Norfydor
electrically operated fire resitant roller shutters linked to the
building management system. 5 Serveryguard 50 fire resitant roller
shutters we fitted to the internal storage rooms, which included
battery back up & various safety features. Finally 1 stainless
steel Visionguard 45 parrell mesh grille to the good in area at the
rear of the grandstand.
