About Wembley stadium

The old stadium with it's famous Twin Towers closed in 2000 and was demolished in 2003 for redevelopment. The new Wembley is the most expensive stadium ever built, and has the second largest capacity in Europe. The new design is for an all-seated capacity of 90,000 protected from the elements by a sliding roof. The stadium's signature feature will be a circular section lattice arch of 7 metre internal diameter with a 315 metre span, erected some 22° off true, and rising to 133 metres tall. According to "Guinness World Records 2006", the archway is the world's longest unsupported roof structure.

The arch was raised for the first time during construction of the Stadium in June 2004. This is the stadium's answer to a new trademark, with the old trademark being the "Twin Towers". The stadium will also be linked with Wembley Park Station on the London Underground via Olympic Way, and Wembley Central via the White Horse Bridge. A "platform system" has also been designed to convert the stadium for athletics use.

The new Wembley is a significant part of the plan for the 2012 Summer Olympics to be held in London; the stadium will be the site of several games in both the men's and women's football tournaments.

Fire Shutters at Wembley

Northern Doors (U.K.) Ltd was awarded the contract to design, supply & install over 400 products through out the stadium, over 300 of the products were our NORFYDOR fire resistant shutters, making it the largest fire shutter contract in UK history.

Our Norfydor fire shutters were fitted to various locations within the stadium firstly to the Bars, Fast food, Betting & Ticket kiosks situated within the stadium concourses. Secondly to the under seat seating area, where seating can be added or removed to suit the type of event.Thirdly to the Groundsman pitch access, which can often be seen during televised events, especially when a football team is taking a corner kick.  Lastly to the basement road entrances. All the shutters are linked to the Building Management System.

Grills at Wembley stadium

Over 80 of our Severyguard 25 grilles were installed to the vomitory entrances. These grilles are used to seal the entrances, but still allowing sight of the seating area & pitch.

Wayfinders at Wembley stadium

Our expertise in shutter design was requested to deal with the problem of allowing air to flow onto the stadium pitch. A common problem with enclosed stadiums, the grass can wilt; get water logged and become and mud bath and becoming unplayable.

We had the ideal solution to the problem with our Wayfinder shutter. A total of 4no pairs of Wayfinder shutters were fitted to each cover of the stadium. Each shutter being over 30 metres in length, making a total of 60 metres as a pair.

There were two main reasons for choosing our Wayfinder shutter. The first because it offers the ability to spin great lengths. The second reason was its ability to follow the contour of the stadium bowl shape.

On event days the Wayfinder shutters are closed, safely sealing the gap behind the supporter’s seats. Ironically also great hangers for supporter’s flags.

When the event has finished and supporters have left the building the Wayfinder shutters are retracted allowing air to circulate around the pitch.
