Motorola's cellular phone European manufacturing headquarters in
Scotland was three glazed atriums to the upper floor. Motrola's design
team needed to allow natural light to the lower levels creating a
high-tech working enviroment. The problem was to maintain the
compartmentation required against the spread of fire.
Our solution was to design pairs of "Fire Resistant Escalator Shutters" where leading edges would meet certainly within the opening and totally close the exsiting void. The void size was some 17 metres long and 4.5 metres wide. When fully retracted the shutters are hidden from view, thus giving unique combination of protection and functionality.
